American "Izakaya"

Friends from Peco Peco, the Japanese website about NYC restaurants were in recently with some samples of Japanese dried fish- true Japanese pub food. They dubbed Jimmy's No. 43 a true "izakaya", which means "pub with good food and drink". Check out our mention in Japanese here.

Tonight at Jimmy's No. 43

Traditionally, European Catholics did not eat meat or animal products during the 46 day period before Easter known as Lent. Not wanting good food to go to waste a celebration was held on the Tuesday before Lent. Mardi Gras, or "Fat Tuesday" is a time to indulge- to eat, drink and be merry! Tonight you can join us at Jimmy's No. 43 to partake in the tradition of eating and drinking- something you might have done anyway, but now you have a special reason to do so! As if that weren't enough, there will be Louisiana's own Abita Beer in the back room!

Tonight is also a benefit night for Food Systems Network NYC, an organization dedicated to universal access to nourishing, affordable food. 10% of tonight's proceeds will help support FSNYC.

Jimmy's No. 43 is American!

All this talk about Abe Lincoln and our new president makes me proud to say that Jimmy's No. 43 is American. The new chef is from Virginia and he has brought solid American food to the menu: pulled pork, with brussels sprouts and pecans; shrimp and grits, with hickory bacon, scallions; are 2 main dishes that are tasty and familiar. Even in the middle of winter, all of our meat and dairy is from small farms making our ingredients better than ever. And the beer? From Green Flash (San Diego) to Sixpoint (Brooklyn), I can proudly say that I like American beer, too!

Interesting Food at Savoy

Peter Hoffman of Savoy has been doing the Greenmarket thing for almost 20 years now. After perusing the archives of his dinner series which has been going on for 15 years, I have to give kudos to this man. He also asked Jimmy's No. 43 to participate in his upcoming cassoulet event, March 14 at Savoy. Now he is our new best friend!

Chicken Country Captain

Low country cook (etc) Hoppin' John Taylor has a beef with the Sunday New York Times recent article featuring Chicken Country Captain. We love John, he is the most ardent voice behind authentic southern low country cooking. If you haven't read his rebuttal to the Times, click here and scroll down to the posting dated January 27.
